Sun Surf Soul Travels Hawaii – Manta Ray Night Dive, Kona- Big Island

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

A few pictures from our night snorkel with these beautiful creatures! I’ve already shared our video in a previous post but thought some pictures would be cool too.

A small group of us (6 people) headed out at sunset to jump in the water. It was an absolutely magic sunset and night! After putting on your snorkeling gear and jumping off the boat you hold onto a foam surfboard that has neon lights under it. This attracts plankton and lures the beautiful manta rays in.

They can grow from 1-4metres (3-12feet) wing tip to wing tip and can live from 50-100years. I must admit I was a little freaked out when the first one came up to fill it’s mouth up! After the first one I relaxed :P We weren’t allowed to touch them as they have a protective slime layer over their bodies but that was ok because they bump into you as they get so close!

Manta Rays are totally harmless to humans so if you get the opportunity to swim with them, definitely take it! Big thanks to my boyfriend for holding his breath and capturing all the content. We use a Sony A6300 camera and Meikon underwater housing.

And if you did miss the video, here it is again:

I hope you enjoyed this post. Please share the love if so 😊 For more of our global adventures head over to www.sunsurfsoul.com

That's awesome! I want to do that dive someday. Do you scuba dive or just snorkel?

Thanks :) Just the snorkel, will have to dive next time!

Great photos, thanks for sharing!

Amazing video!!!

Thank you ^_^

Amazing photos 😯👌🏻

Thanks!

Beautiful manta rays! Are using an action camera to take the video and photos?

:) I've got an underwater housing for my Sony camera. It only fits the kit lens but that's ok for now! Used to use a GoPro but the quality with underwater housing is soooo much better.

Yeah, I'm thinking of getting a proper underwater housing, but it's pretty expensive.

yeah..we used to have a canon and the housing was in the thousands so could never justify buying it. But now with the Sony we picked up brand new housing for about $250! Our one is from Meikon, check them out, never know they might have one to fit your camera :)

Ok thanks for the info, i will check out that brand! :)
