Life & Death Haikus: Layover Fright (Original Poem)

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

About to board plane
Tornadoes rush at aircraft
We run underground...

I'll never forget the time I was staring out the windows in the waiting area before boarding my flight during a layover in Texas. Tornadoes came out of nowhere and were pushing around the baggage carrier vehicles and bullying the planes making them sway and drift and we all had to evacuate into this cold, cemented bunker in the airport, literally was like movie status, no food or drink vending machines, just straight cement walls a few emergency lights, sounds of whispers, concerned murmurs, a couple of whining children, a crying baby, people trying to use their cell phones and intervals of silence as we listened to what happened next. Needless to say, we waited it out an hour and a half and were able to board our plane the next hour as the tornado passed over the airport. It was one heck of an experience though going through a quick yet effective emergency procedure...

All of my flights have been boring by comparison but thank goodness you guys were safe on the ground for the worst of it 👍
