Hoy quiero describiros una de las maravillas artísticas medievales que aún se conservan como fueron concebidas originalmente. Son las vidrieras de la Catedral de León.
Todo el edificio de la Catedral de León se diseñó para poder albergar unas vidrieras magnificas. En el interior, se consigue así una iluminación que induce una profunda espiritualidad: un entorno casi celestial.
Las vidrieras de la catedral de León se construyeron en los siglos XIII y XIV y afortunadamente desde entonces se conservan los originales. Junto a las vidrieras de la catedral de Chartres son las más importante del mundo.

Today I want to describe to you one of the medieval artistic wonders that are still preserved as they were originally conceived. They are the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of León.
The entire building of the Cathedral of León was designed to house some magnificent stained glass windows. In the interior, an illumination is obtained that induces a deep spirituality: an almost celestial environment.
The stained glass windows of the Leon's cathedral were built in the 13th and 14th centuries and, fortunately, the originals are preserved. Next to the stained-glass windows of Chartres Cathedral are the most important in the world.
El arte cristiano adoptó la técnica de construcción de la vidriera aprendiéndola de la cultura musulmana. Se comenzó a introducir las vidrieras en los muros de los edificios en el siglo XI, aunque no llegaría a su esplendor hasta dos siglos después.
Christian art adopted the technique of building the stained-glass window by learning it from the Muslim culture. It began to introduce the windows on the walls of buildings in the eleventh century, although it would not reach its splendor until two centuries later.
En el siglo XVI se fue perdiendo interés y mas tarde lo medieval comenzó a no gustar siendo incluso eliminados estos elementos de muchos templos, ya que además exigían un mantenimiento ya que son frágiles. Por eso se conservan tan pocas vidrieras de esta magnitud.
In the sixteenth century was losing interest and later the medieval began not to like being even removed these elements of many temples, as they also required maintenance because they are fragile. That is why so few stained glass windows of this magnitude are preserved.
En su época de esplendor, las vidrieras eran consideradas como una parte fundamental del edificio y no solo un motivo decorativo que le daba al templo una apariencia mágica.

Las vidrieras están distribuidas en varios niveles según su altura en el muro. En la parte más baja están los motivos florales, los terrenales. Según se aumenta en santidad las vidrieras se sitúan más altas.
The stained glass windows are distributed in several levels according to their height in the wall. In the lower part are the floral motifs, the earthly ones. As the holiness increases, the stained glass windows are higher.
La Catedral de León es uno de los edificios con mayor superficie de vidrieras ya que alcanzan los 1764 metros cuadrados de superficie. Hay 134 ventanales y 3 grandes rosetones. Debido a las dimensiones contenidas de la catedral, esta ingente superficie cobra una importancia que abruma aún más.
The Cathedral of León is one of the buildings with the largest surface area of stained glass, reaching 1764 square meters. There are 34 windows and 3 large rosettes. Due to the contained dimensions of the cathedral, this huge surface takes on an importance that overwhelms even more.
La Catedral Gótica de León es muy interesante sobre todo por sus magníficas vidrieras. Estas fabulosas vidrieras artesanales, constituyen la mayor colección de vidrieras medievales del mundo.

Por haber quitado muros y para ser sustituidos por vidrieras, se construyeron contrafuertes para soportar el peso del edificio ya que sirven para desviar el peso del templo al exterior y repartir la carga.
For having removed walls and to be replaced by stained glass, buttresses were built to support the weight of the building as they serve to divert the weight of the temple to the outside and distribute the load.
La Catedral de León se inició en el siglo XIII por el impulso de Fernando I y su hermana Urraca. Es una de las mejores obras del estilo gótico y tiene una clarísima influencia francesa. Se encuentra en pleno Camino de Santiago.
The cathedral of Leon began in the thirteenth century by the impulse of Fernando I and his sister Urraca. It is one of the best works of the Gothic style and has a very clear French influence. It is located on the Camino de Santiago.
Tras los primeros triunfos cosechados en la reconquista y justo en el momento en el que el arte románico estaba floreciendo, Fernando I trasladó los restos de San Isidoro de Sevilla hasta León y por ello intentó fomentar todo lo posible su ciudad.
After the first triumphs harvested in the reconquest and just at the moment when Romanesque art was flourishing, Fernando I moved the remains of San Isidoro from Seville to León and therefore tried to promote his city as much as possible.
Al igual que la mayoría de catedrales francesas, la de León está construida con un módulo geométrico basado en el triángulo. Es la catedral más francesa de las catedrales españolas.
Like most French cathedrals, that of León is built with a geometric module based on the triangle. It is the most French cathedral of the Spanish cathedrals.
Su simbología y arquitectura están estrechamente ligados con los de la catedral de Saint Denis, la catedral de Notre Dame de París y la catedral de Reims.

La ciudad de León era uno de los hitos más importantes del Camino de Santiago, también llamado Camino Francés.

Al haberse construido sobre unas antiguas termas romanas, la catedral siempre ha tenido serios problemas de cimentación, por lo que ha requerido frecuentes restauraciones. En el siglo XIX se acometió una gran restauración pues el edifico estaba al borde del desastre, sobre todo tras el terremoto e Portugal.
Having been built on ancient Roman baths, the cathedral has always had serious problems of foundation, which has required frequent restoration. In the nineteenth century a great restoration was undertaken because the building was on the verge of disaster, especially after the earthquake in Portugal.
Concluida la restauración en 1901 el edifico recobró todo su esplendor siendo hoy en día el monumento gótico más armónico de España.
Once the restoration was completed in 1901, the building recovered its splendor, being today the most harmonious gothic monument in Spain.
En esta última década se están restaurando también las vidrieras, usando las más modernas técnicas, y recuperando su grandiosidad y colorido.
