In Bir itself there are more than 10 monastries. Have you heard about spiti valley?.
I just googled it and looks like spiti valley is truly tremendous.
Well you assumed correct @cave-man, this area is super lush green due to Dhauladhar mountain range although Spiti is kind of too much dry & cold desert.
