How to plan a long-term trip / Wie plane ich eine Langzeitreise?

A long term trip is not equal to 2 weeks holiday.
Much more needs to be thought of and organized.

After I already travelled around the world for 17 months in 2018, and now go back in February, I know a lot about what to pay attention to and what to consider.

Money
One of the most important factors of such a trip is money. How much do I need? On the Internet you will find this question in the thousands. The problem is that you can't standardize it. Depending on the country and travel destination, the costs are very different.
I spent about 30'000.- for 1.5 years, including flights, insurances and everything.

Already more than one year before the trip I set the starting point, I got myself a budget plan, fixed my monthly income and expenses and calculated how much I have available at the time of the start. This was very helpful and I can only recommend it to everyone.

I also stopped shopping, limited myself to eating in restaurants and drinking alcohol.

Insurance
Insurance is important at home and even more important when travelling. A foreign health insurance is indispensable, of course it costs something, but can be vital, because do you have thousands of francs to pay for a hospital stay yourself?
Since I have signed off in Switzerland, I was able to cancel the compulsory health insurance and then take out a cheaper foreign health insurance. Everything is 100% covered and I don't pay anything myself.

Unsubscribe
As mentioned above, I can unsubscribe from my home.
I can do this two months before departure, so I can cancel any contract without notice.

Cancellation of contracts
Cancel your superfluous contracts. Everything you no longer need at home. Do you still need e.g. your mobile phone contract?

Doctor's appointments
Go back to the doctor for check-ups. Especially dentist and gynaecologist for women. Depending on the region where you are going, an appointment with a tropical doctor would also be good.

Organisational matters
It is best to issue a authority for a confidant of yours, and the mail should also be redirected.

Credit card
With my Swiss Visa card or bank card, I pay quite a lot of fees for cash withdrawals. That's why I bought an account at a german Bank so that I can withdraw cash for free with my Visa card.

Sell superfluous items
Since I have dissolved my flat and/or my WG room, I have sold everything unnecessary. So now I have almost no furniture left and only my personal belongings.
This has also filled my travel account a bit.

Book flights, apply for visa
Already some weeks or months before you can look out for flights, if you find a bargain, book it. You should also apply for visas for the countries that need a visa beforehand, as I did for Vietnam. You should also always have some passport photos with you for visas on arrival. You can also book your first accommodation a few weeks in advance.

cancel your job
Consider the notice period for your job. If you have a good relationship with your boss, tell it beforehand. That's only fair.

Friends and family
Inform your family and friends about your plans at an early stage, but do not let them dissuade you.
You can also plan a farewell party or at least the last reunion.

It is important that you start planning early so that you don't end up under stress.
And enjoy the anticipation of the journey. It is so much fun to plan everything and to read about the countries you will travel to.

Eine Langzeitreise ist nicht gleich 2 Wochen Urlaub.
Es muss an viel mehr gedacht und einiges organisiert werden.

Nachdem ich bereits 2018 für 17 Monate auf Weltreise war, und nun im Februar erneut gehe, weiss ich so einiges, worauf man achten und was man bedenken muss.

Geld
Einer der wichtigsten Faktoren einer solchen Reise ist Geld. Wie viel brauche ich? Im Internet findet man diese Frage zu tausenden. Das Problem ist, dass man das nicht vereinheitlichen kann. Je nach Land und Reisestiel sind die Kosten sehr unterschiedlich
Ich habe für 1.5 Jahre ca. 30'000.- ausgegeben, inkl. Flüge, Versicherungen und alles drum und dran.

Bereits als ich mehr als ein Jahr vor der Reise den Startpunkt fegelegt habe, habe ich mir einen Budgetplan zugelegt, habe meine monatlichen Ein- und Ausgaben festgelegt und so berechnet, wie viel ich zum Zeitpunkt des Startes zur Verfügung habe. Dies war sehr hilfreich und kann ich jedem nur empfehlen.

Zudem habe ich aufgehört zu Shoppen, hab mich sehr eingeschränkt, was Essen gehen und Alkohol trinken anbelangt.

Versicherung
Eine Versicherung ist zu Hause wichtig und noch viel wichtiger auf Reisen. Eine Auslandkrankenversicherung ist unerlässlich, natürlich kostet das was, kann aber lebenswichtig sein, denn hast du tausende von Franken um einen Spitalaufenthalt selber zu bezahlen?
Da ich mich in der Schweiz abgemeldet habe, konnte ich die obligatorische Krankenkasse kündigen und dann eine günstigere Auslandkrankenversicherung abschliessen. Damit ist alles zu 100% gedeckt und ich bezahle nichts selber.

Abmeldung
Wie oben erwähnt, kann ich mich bei meiner Gemeinde abmelden.
Dies kann ich zwei Monate vor Abreise machen, damit kann ich dann jegliche Verträge ohne Kündigungsfrist kündigen.

Verträge kündigen
Löse deine überflüssigen Verträge auf. Alles was du zu Hause nicht mehr brauchst. Brauchst du z.B deinen Handyvertrag noch?

Arzttermine
Geh nochmals für Check-Ups zum Arzt. Vor allem Zahnarzt und für Frauen Gynäkologe. Je nach Region wo du hingehst, wäre ein Termin bei einem Tropenarzt auch noch gut.

Organisatorisches
Am besten du stellst eine Vollmacht für einen Vertrauten von dir aus, zudem sollte die Post umgeleitet werden.

Kreditkarte
Mit meiner Schweizer Visa-Karte oder der Bankkarte, bezahle ich für Bargeldabhebungen ziemlich viel Gebühren. Deshalb habe ich mir über eine Deutsche Bank ein Konto zugelegt, damit ich mit der dazugehörigen Visa -Karte gratis Bargeld abheben kann.

Überflüssiges verkaufen
Da ich meine Wohnung bzw. mein WG-Zimmer aufgelöst habe, habe ich alles unnötige verkauft. Daher habe ich nun fast keine Möbel mehr und nur noch mein persönliches Gut.
Dies hat auch mein Reisekonto etwas aufgefüllt.

Flüge buchen, Visa beantragen
Bereits einige Wochen oder Monate vorher kannst du ausschau nach Flügen haben, wenn du ein Schnäppchen findest, buche es. Zudem solltest du bereits Visa beantragen für die Länder, die vorher ein Visa brauchen, bei mir war das bei Vietnam der Fall. Du solltest auch einige Passfotos immer dabei haben für Visa on arrival. Einige Wochen zum voraus kannst du auch schon die erste Unterkunft buchen.

Job kündigen
Bedenke die Kündigungsfrist für deinen Job. Falls du ein gutes Verhältnis zu deinem Boss hast, sag es bereits vorher. Das ist nur fair.

Freunde und Familie
Informiere frühzeitig deine Familie und Freunde über dein Vorhaben, aber lasse dich auf keinen Fall davon abbringen.
Zudem kannst du eine Abschiedsparty planen oder zumindest die letzten Wiedersehen planen.

Wichtig ist, dass du anfängst frühzeitig zu planen, nicht damit du am Ende noch Stress hast.
Und geniesse die Vorfreude auf die Reise. Es macht so viel spass alles zu planen und über die Länder zu lesen, die du bereisen wirst.
