On those beaches there were many or few stones stacked? What is the religion that predominates in your country and in Cambodia? In Asia is where there are more followers of the Dharmic religions, perhaps that's why your friend gave you that motive, which is really one of several that exist.
From what I see balancing stones is less common than I thought, maybe that is why there is not so much information about it, especially the negative environmental impact that we can cause if we exceed this.
