The popular temple grounds of Zenkoji
Drawing a temple over the water
On our way to Kanazawa on the west coast, we stopped in Nagano, stored our luggage at the train station and visited the popular temple of Zenkoji, one of the most famous in Japan. It was founded in the 7th century, and stores the first Buddhist statue brought to Japan.
After visiting the main temple, I came upon this temple perched over the water. It has a profound tranquility. The entire Zenkoji complex is recognized for its cultural heritage and is considered a National Treasure. I first drew it in brown ink, then added the watercolor washes later.
