A colorful town in more ways than one
Day of the Dead
San Miguel de Allende is probably best known for its popular Day of the Dead celebration, where people come out in throngs in extravagant costumes and artfully painted faces. It is an extravagant, bold, brash celebration you just have to experience. Before arriving in the main square, we visited the cemetery with all its crowds, flower merchants, and excitement. I counted 8 separate bands playing there, some just a step or two from the next. There was an acoustic guitar band next to a brass band. Sheer craziness but fun.
It is a colonial town nestled in a high valley that boasts a perfect year-round climate. I loved walking the old cobblestone streets of brightly painted shops and homes. We stayed in a 400 year old house with stone walls so thick the wifi couldn’t penetrate the dining room.
