We are now in the land of Pho! Have you ever been to a Vietnamese restaurant where you are from? If so you probably had Pho or some spring rolls; probably both. Here in Vietnam it seems like that is all they eat. Pho Bo or beef soup. It comes with some sides of herbs and bean sprouts, some chili sauce, some chop sticks and a spoon. Seems like every restaurant is serving it up in this country.

My first five meals were Pho upon arriving in Ho Chi Minh. Good thing is I really like the stuff. Next on the menu is these spring rolls; wrapped thin sheets of rice paper filled with rice noodles, a little lettuce and usually a shrimp. After that we move on to the Bang Mi, and that is not just what she said!

Bang Mi is a left over from the French Colonial error. Basically you can find them all over the country on little side stands where they take a small French Baguette and fill it with what is laying around...well, sometimes it just seems that way but a good one will have nice slices of roast pork, cilantro, chili, and quality pate. A not so good one will be a stale bun filled a with a hot slab of mystery meat.

Moving down the menu is frankly a whole lot of weird stuff that I tried and didn't like or I'm just not into chickens feet and organ meat. I've seen everything on the menu here from sea horse, to snake, to scorpion. The people here eat it up like an American eats a hamburger. How about a whole grilled baby chicken? That's easy to find, but not easy to put down.

All in all this "Food Porn" series from Vietnam is more like an old Ron Jeremy VHS that you found in your creepy uncle's sock drawer. Vietnam is not a foodie paradise, at least not in my book. Fortunately we found some good Japanese cuisine and some other international foods along our travels in this exciting South East Asian Country, and the photos are mixed into this collage to spice things up. Now get out your lube and box of tissues, here comes another round of Travel Pro Food Porn!

You going to be in Nha Trang?

Hey Brother! I just got to Nha Trang today! :)

Got ourselves a nice two bedroom apartment on the 23rd floor of that big building on the northern side of the bay. I think it's called the Mường Thanh Khánh Hòa building.

If you are here too, lets meet up!

Thakns for following and supporting my blog :)

email me at [email protected] and we can make plans.

Have a great day!

-Dan

Hi Dan,

I left Nha Trang and am in Vung Tau. Probably won't be returning there but might cross paths somewhere and will connect if so. Keep having fun and posting!

Too bad we missed each other. Looks like we are heading in opposite directions. We went ot Vinpearl land today. That was a lot of fun. Tomorrow, one more day of rest, then we start heading up towards Hoi Ann, Hue, and Danang. Motorbiking Vietnam is a great adventure!

Hopefully we can connect somewhere else some other time. From Danang we are flying back to Thailand for a couple more months. Thanks for the support and kind words, it certainly helps keep my blog going!

Have a great time in Vung Tau!

Yes, in about 2 weeks.

We have been living in Vietnam for almost 5 months and I have to agree that it's not a foodie paradise in the same way that Thailand is (for example). There are some things that a pretty delicious though. Huế is really the culinary destination in the country but you should be able to get some good stuff in HCMC. Try Bún chả Ha Noi (obviously from the North but we found a great one in HCMC) and try to find a "bang mi" 🤣 🤣 🤣 (bánh mì) that is mystery-meat free. Of course, the standard one is just as you said but you can find some damn good ones with actual grilled meat and fresh veggies. Bánh bao is another favorite of ours. Hope you enjoy your time here!

Awesome! Thank you very much. I'll certainly keep in mind what you recommend. We did find some pretty good Bang Mi in Can Tho with some nicely roasted piggy in there, but it was like "a lucky find". In fact we now get excited over fast food! Which is pretty sad. Lotteria is our new favorite, and the Big Star burger which is like a beefier big mac. Says a lot about the food of a country when you're getting excited over fast food. In Thailand I would think, people are crazy to come to Thailand and go to McDonalds! There is great food everywhere! A couple thousand kilometers and a different food culture, and my, how things change. But thanks again for the tips! If we pass through Hue, I'll hit you up and maybe we can hang out. Have a great day! -Dan
