Putting Down Roots /

Sugar Maple roots spreading out on all sides. These trees are shallow rooted with no tap root directly under their trunks. That is why the roots spread out right at the base to support the tree.

These trees are all on my property. They grew from seeds that had blown there from large maples that once were planted along the road, years ago. Today there is only one left but with little life left in it.

I like the bold look it gives of anchoring it'self.

How delightful to have a place where a tree like that can grow!

Yeah, it's kinda cool to see the way the roots form a stand. Yo, what do you do with these trees? Do you get maple syrup from them? 🌚

They are big enough now, but collecting the juice and boiling it down is a lot of time consuming work. I did it once when I cut a high branch over my garden area. I saw the watery sap pouring out so put some large pans to catch it. I didn't boil it down enough so it was still watery but was very delicious.
