As promised today I will cover the remaining four liberal arts, taught after the Trivium in the ancient schools and up until recent times when they have been largely removed from our state education.
I want to clarify when I say they have been removed it does not mean a subject with the same name is not taught in schools today, it could be there but in a limited variant, not in the correct order or made overly complicated in order to push people off to more “fun” stuff.
The first study is Arithmetic – The abstract number in itself, outside of space and time.
It is the study of quantity involving the combination of numbers through addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Basic math.
The second is Geometry – The number in space.
It is the branch of mathematics concerned with shape, size, relative position and the properties of space. Quantification of form.
The third is Music – The number in time.
It is the art form which employs vibration, rhythm, dynamics and the interplay between sound and silence as its mediums for expression. Critical for improving the right hemisphere of the brain and balancing it.
The fourth is Astronomy – The number in space and time.
It is the natural science that deals with the study of celestial objects such as stars, planets, comets, nebulae and galaxies.
They can also be called Number, Geometry, Harmonics and Cosmology.
Again the Quadrivium must be learned in the correct order to gain the maximum benefit because the subjects increase in complexity.
Together the seven liberal arts were considered the common knowledge of the free people and a prerequisite to become a truly intelligent person.
All slaves were forbidden to read the same books and receive the same knowledge as the free people.
It is the difference between the asleep and the awake!
