Turkey .. mullet defies water to meet its instincts

in #turkey6 years ago

Millions of mullets in Lake Wan, Malha, eastern Turkey, are on a trek, hoping to reach fresh water for breeding at a certain time of the year, similar to Norway's salmon. One of the largest lakes in the country, with an area of about 12,000 square kilometers, it is 150 meters deep and contains several small rivers, where the mullet is unique. The tedious mule journey usually takes place between 15 April and 15 July each year. Fish migrate from the salty and alkaline waters of the lake to freshwater, in an amazing landscape that attracts nature lovers, with thousands of tourists coming to see it. The Turkish authorities are keen to protect the mullet from extinction, by preventing fishing in the lake and the surrounding rivers.
