Barito, a 10-year-old female orangutan in Lagoi Safari Park, Bintan, Riau Islands (Kepri), gave birth to a male baby named Bintan.
Director of the Conservation Institute of PT Safari Lagoi Bintan Tony said the birth of Barito had been reported to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia.
"Barito gave birth to a baby male orangutan naturally or without the help of a doctor, at around 3:00 p.m., Monday (1/10/2018) yesterday afternoon," Tony said through a written message received by reporters on Thursday (04/10/2018) last night.
Tony told of Bintan as a result of Barito's marriage with a 15-year-old male Kapuas (male parent), about 10 months ago.
"We deliberately gave the name Bintan, to signify the baby island of the baby flower from the Kapuas and Barito orangutan pair," he explained.
Before being in Lagoi Safari Park, Bintan, Kapuas orangutans and Barito had lived in Thailand. From there, both were taken to Indonesia and placed on Bintan.
"The birth of the Bintan is inseparable from the hard work of the Indonesian conservation institution. Kapuas and Barito are the result of repatriation efforts," he said.
"This is the history of Bintan Island because it can bring in orangutans and successfully breed them. This is the first time it has happened and has become a history in Bintan," he added.
Furthermore Tony said they were treated at Lagoi Safari Park since 2016 and for a year adapted.
"If I'm not mistaken, a year ago they both married and finally gave birth three days ago," he explained.
For his own pregnancy, Tony admitted he only found out about 5 months ago. Marked menstruation cease and see the stomach and buttocks are filled.
"Until now, we have always provided nutrition. The goalkeeper and the operator are standby to watch day and night to observe every hour," he explained.
