Ulog 52: Civic Duty

in #ulog6 years ago

November 6th is Election Day in the USA. This year, as it is in any year, it's important to register and go to the poll to vote if you want your voice to be heard. If you don't vote, you really can't complain much. Someone else who is active with his/her civic duty gets to decide for you. And sometimes that may be irrelevant to you, sometimes it can have major impact. It may not even matter who won, but as long as the process is fair and just, then I think you can go to sleep at night feeling good that your voice has been heard.

With that said, there is an active voting session going on Netcoins to determine the next coin that they will list on their exchange for free. While not as critical as voting for a governmental legislator, it does call to the power of mass. It builds excitement for the community and I am sure provide Netcoins with some level of publicity.

I went and voted. Here's a screenshot of the actual confirmed vote for Steem to be added. Steem is currently second on the list with approximately 5,300 votes. The site allows one to vote one time per day so I am pretty sure people are doing just that.

Beyond the voting, I am a little surprised by the low volume. 5000 +/- 10% voters seem like a very low number for such a large community. Maybe the words haven't gotten out yet. I read somewhere that I thought there was somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-100k accounts on steemit. If such is the case, then the voter turnout for steemit is only approximately 5-10%, which is a really low turnout, when you also have to consider that people have voted multiple times. Steemit is supposed to be a social network built on top of a blockchain, such is the uniqueness and comparative advantage of that crypto.

I looked at the Number 1 and it's something called Pac Coin. I have never even heard of that coin before and it seems that they have better support. They must a very active community somewhere. So even if Steemit somehow muster the community support and everyone shows up to vote and won, I think it would be useful to look at Pac Coin to see what they're doing right in being able to garner that kind of active support from their community.

Best of luck to the Steemit Community!
