Idea: Steemit's 2nd Factor authentication (2FA)

in #utopian-io8 years ago

When you think of safety, you know you need more security. You have antivirus for your pc's that act as a security for you Pc. You have SSl for secure transactions and FTP for your files.

So why not on Steemit?

Now you might say, "Hey, no need for 2FA because we have this huge alpha numeric key."
Your keys could be stolen anytime without you knowing it. Some third party steemit surface could steal your keys without you knowing it and making all the transactions and also may change your keys so you no longer could use your account. In this situation, 2FA becomes important in order to secure your account.

Where on steemit can we implement the 2FA:

Here are some places you can implement 2FA

1) Transferring Steem or SBD

Implementing 2FA here can verify that it is the rightful owner making the transaction. No one else without the 2FA can make any transactions on your behalf. On clicking "Transfer" the 2FA should be appearing.

2) Power Down

Again only the authorized person can power down and no one else. On clicking "Power Down" the 2FA prompt should be appearing.

3) Changing your keys.

If someone had your master key (which could be easily stolen) and you have no 2FA in place, you have no way to keep you account safe. You will basically loose all that you had. If you were to have 2FA in place, No one else besides you can change your keys. When you click on "generate keys" the 2FA prompt should appear.
Now you know no one can mess with your account.

Google 2FA could be used as google's 2FA keeps changing every 30 Seconds and thus it's hard to know what the next number would be. It has an app too. But if you don't prefer the app, you can still use it on the Web. Here's the Link

You're not just safe, you are secure!

This has been discussed in https://steemit.com/steemit/@steemnews/two-factor-authentication-for-steemit-2fa and if you google "steemit 2fa" you will find lots of existing articles.

Hey, my apologies... I did not Google this... Plus this idea did not exist in utopian.io search... I apologize for having something similar

I just read that post... The post has no details... It's just few lines saying about 2fa

hi, I am not here to blame. just pointing out that the idea has been published before. The utopian category 'suggestion' is not about how the idea can be interpreted or explained better.

Anyone given the idea of Steemit+2FA can write their similar post, which will be counted as duplicate. To be honest, I thought about this days ago, check the comment that I left at my post: https://steemit.com/cn/@justyy/1buna#@ace108/re-justyy-re-ace108-re-justyy-1buna-20171105t124933874z
However, I did a google search and knows this has been published so I didn't write it on utopian.

It doesn't matter whether the original post has detailed explanation or not, since the title is already quite self explanatory.

But, as @arie.steem point out, this is the first post in utopian.

Thank you for the contribution. It has been approved.
Great idea, btw! Never too secure!

This very useful and important idea. Like it

Hi, yes, except this has been discussed already. Try google "steemit 2FA" and you will find lots of posts.

no problem with that, I also just know with this idea when there is this post via utopian, if this is the first no problem, and for the future we can not accept any more idea like this in utopian. because it will be duplicate in utopian.

if the post does not violate the utopian rule will not be a problem ...., I think also mike did not know before about this post, I also just found this when it was made in utopian.
we can forget this conversation guys :)

Personality I will not use them. Especially one requiring organizations such as Google. In fact it surprises me that programers actually think they are secure. This has been going on since I started programming for the net in the late 90's. Most amount to things. 1st a far more complex password system that can easily be forgotten. 2 nd depentance on 3rd party and questionable organizations such as Google. Who's sold goal is to sell your information.

Steemit can have it's own 2FA which is sent to your email when completing a activity...

hi ......... friend .......
How are you...........
I am your new friend for steemit .. plz follow me and up votes me ........

There could be a 2FA on steemit. But, would'nt it be redundant ? You see, the transactions on steem blockchain would require only the private owner keys. Even if steemit or any steem wallet required 2FA , a person who has your private owner keys could use simple CLI tools like piston etc to interact with steem blockchain and get hold of your steem !!

There's always a way to go about... We always look for better safety to some extent... Even your keys can be hacked right...

Yes. But if the keys are hacked. 2FA is redundant. That's my only point.... Unless, you mean 2FA for whole blockchain, which I feel may not be feasible for a decentralised network. Of course, would love to have security of our steem accounts improved !
