As an individual that make s tutorial contents, I have used many screen recorders in the past. These apps are not only useful for walkthrough recordings. You may just want to record some activities on your mobile device either to show a friend about it or make reference to the activities later. There are tens of these apps available for both Android and iOS devices in app stores. Some mobile devices even have inbuilt apps for this functionality. However, a large percentage of mobile devices depend on external apps to access this functionality.
Just recently, I came across the MNML Screen Recorder and I found this app amazing.
Project Overview
MNML Screen Recorder is a lightweight, easy-to-use screen recorder that makes recording onscreen activities pretty easy and convenient. It has a simple and attention-to-details design and does not require users to go through a long setup to use it. MNML Screen Recorder is still in beta but already works perfectly on mobile devices. It is an open Source application, meaning that any individual with the required skills can contribute to the development. As well, it contains no ads and despite requires permission to access the device media contents, it protects users’ privacy.
MNML is developed by Affolestad and its first version was released December 2018. Up till now, there have been over 20 releases, each with newly added features. You can check out the previously released versions here. Despite being a newcomer, this app has already been downloaded on over 100,000 devices and this shows how much satisfaction users get from it.
Getting started with MNML
MNML is available on Google Play for Android devices. You can search for it or install it directly through this link.
After installation, launch the app and grant the permission request required by the app to access the media contents on the device.
You may want to do a brief setup before starting to use the app. Click on the Menu icon situated at the top-right corner and select Settings as shown below.
Now click on Controls as you can see from the screenshot shown below.
You can enable a few controls here. I love to enable the Stop on Screen Off control as this allows me to stop my ongoing recording by simply short-click my device’s power button. This switches off the screen and recording stop. You can as well enable the Stop on Shake option as this allows us to stop recording by simply shaking our devices. The demerit of this is that recordings stop even when the shake is accidental. So I do not always enable this control.
By default, MNML does not record the audio with the visual. You need to enable this option through the settings. Click on Recording as shown below.
Click on the Record Audio control to enable it and allow the permission request that follows.
That is all. The app is all set. Use the blue Record icon to start recording.
Grant the Overlay permission to be able to use it while recording your videos.
Now enable this control as shown below.
My experience using this app
I have used other screen recorders in recording tutorial videos in the past. About a month ago, I recorded some videos on Google Admob and how young individuals; students and unemployed can leverage this to make decent earnings daily. Although Google only commences their publishers' payments by 21st of each month, what you get to receive by the month need to be earned a month earlier. I showed a lot of stuff on how to avoid getting banned by this company and increase CPC (Cost Per Click), have a balance RPM and all that. I even created a few lightweight apps that make earning with Google Admob pretty convenient.
I found MNML Screen Recorder very helpful and I can point out some features that are exclusive to this app only as far as I can tell. It is more convenient to use, attention to details and has clear, high-quality voice and visual recording functionalities. There is one popular screen recorder that I have used before and I find some defects in terms of its recording quality. I just do not want to mention it here. The recording sound fades off and on, i.e. fluctuates when you make a long recording that is more than an hour. I am guessing that is why most people have not noticed it. Despite being in beta, I have not noticed this defect or any other bug on MNML.
In a nutshell, this is a good screen recorder and I believe it to be the best when its functionality is concerned.
Features of MNML Screen Recorder
From my use of this app, I have brought together the features that will make me choose it over its competitors anytime any day. These features are discussed below.
Simple design
MNML has a very simple design and I like this about it. I do not think that I am the only individual that fancies simple design in both mobile and desktop applications. Yes, there is a need for multiple functionalities but I believe this should not get in the way of an app’s simplicity and result in a complex system.
Attention to details
From what I have seen from this app, it has a few features. It does not include unnecessary add-ons that will only add to its weight and waste device storage. Many developers choose to add unnecessary features that would not add any value to the main functionality of an application. I do not get it – is it to impress other developers and project owners? Well, if that should be the case, they stand to lose a good amount of users that get irritated by being distracted from the details while showing off to their competitors.
Quality recording
Screen recording is the primary function of this app and as far as I can tell, is the only functionality on it. However, the developers did great work to ensure that this is of a high standard. The quality of the recordings visual and audio is of the highest standard. Many users pay less attention to this anyway. However, the ones that make formal recordings know the importance of the quality and that is why this app is becoming a fast-rising star among its peers.
Quick Toggle shortcut
This is another standout feature of MNML Screen Recorder. I have not come across this feature on any of the screen recorders that I have used on mobile devices before and I don’t think it exists anywhere else. Not among the ones before MNML anyway. The quick toggle shortcut allows us to simply quickly launch this app from the app tray and start recording right away. You can then pause or continue your recording by swiping down the notification shade as we can do on other screen recorders. You can as well place the MNML quick toggle on your notification shade for easy access. This to me is a quite interesting feature that other developers need to include in their apps.
Night mode
The dark theme is suitable for interactions with mobile apps at night. Some people even use this theme during the day and also on desktop computers. It provides great graphics and good views that do not affect the eyes.
To access the dark theme feature on MNML, find your way to the app settings page and click on UI.
Now enable the automatic dark theme as shown below. You can as well choose to use this theme permanently.
On activating the automatic dark theme, more controls appear. Set the automatic start and end time for the automatic dark theme and that is all.
Conclusion and rating
MNML is the best mobile screen recorder app that I have used to date. The developer, Afollestad did a great work and he deserves an accolade for giving us such a quality application. It is simple and lightweight and these make it installable even on devices with minimal storage space. It does not contain ads like many others; hence our privacy as users are protected. Despite being in beta, I see no reason why I would give it anything less than its deserved full 5 stars.
