I live off the grid as well but not a veteran. We volunteer to help with it. It's a non-profit started by a veteran that was wounded in the war in Afganistan and loosely the way it works is Veterans can live there off the grid free as long as they do at least 35 hours of work toward the next build. The builds are based on the Earthship design with some improvements.
