How Do You Choose a VPN App?

How Do You Choose a VPN App? Lately I keep seeing a ton of VPN apps in the Play Store and I honestly have no idea how people pick something sane out of that pile. šŸ˜… Do you guys actually sit and read through reviews, or just trust the rating and go with whatever’s at the top? I’ve installed a few ā€œhigh ratedā€ ones that turned out super sketchy or full of ads, so now I’m a bit more paranoid and trying to figure out a smarter way to choose.

Sort: Ā

Personally I try to be picky, but I still don’t turn it into a science project. I usually filter out anything with a ridiculous amount of permissions, then skim a few recent reviews to see if people complain about speed or random disconnects. For Android I ended up using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.toggle.vpn just because it looked simple and didn’t nag me with registrations or weird pop-ups. It’s kind of ā€œgood enoughā€ for casual use: one tap, it connects, and I can forget about it while I’m checking stuff on public Wi-Fi or hopping over small region blocks.

Somehow I care more about how my phone feels overall than about any single app category. If a new install starts spamming notifications, draining battery or slowing things down, it goes straight to the uninstall pile. I do a small cleanup every few weeks, remove things I haven’t opened in ages, and double-check what has access to location or background data. After that the whole system stays smoother, and I don’t end up scrolling through five pages of icons just to find the two tools I actually use.
