Like he said it's all just an opinion and you can't tell whose telling the truth but the fact remains that once you've joined your opinion is it's in the right, becoming indifferent after that point isn't a option. Your only option is to find another way out. I think he's headstrong into trusting what he's told and that's why he doesn't feel obligated or has a inclination to find anything else out.
There are many like him (including you) who figured out the attacks are unjustifiable and a disaster. It's a shame a soldier is bound to duty (well it should be a good thing). My opinion is that if we keep this up, by the next century we'll have more than half our population of able bodied men who we've pissed off in other countries waiting for the chance to get revenge on us

It's a very hard and sensitive subject to approach a person with a strong military background. At least you got him to investigate it more.
