Yes, the reason we went there was a lie. The truth actually had more to do with the Taliban(whom we trained and sent there to chase the Russians out) had stopped selling us Opium and was even starting to burn the fields. Plus, if we lose the Opium fields in Afghanistan or we decide that's not enough you can expect military action in South East Asia ie, the Golden Triangle. The $$ the CIA makes on Opium sales(Legal AND Illegal) far outweighs any other matters when it comes to Afghanistan.
