"Russian troops did not invade Ukraine through Belorussia"

in #warinukraine2 years ago (edited)

This is sort of a follow-up from my previous post, conversations across the iron curtain.

In the version of truth that I subscribe to, there was a big joint Russian-Belorussian "military exercise" in Belorussia, nearby the Ukraine border, just prior to the war. During this "exercise" the Russian troops moved closer and closer to the Ukraine border. On the 24th of February Russian troops (certainly including many tanks and heavy battle equipment) crossed the border from Belorussia towards Ukraine and did a big push towards Kyiv, on both sides of Dnepr, and during this big push they did occupy Tsjernobyl. They also did have this big convoy of military equipment (wikipedia article) coming from Belorussia, going on the west bank of Dnepr and towards Kyiv. Eventually this campaign failed, Russian military forces north of Kyiv retreated - quite much of the forces through Belorussia - and was redeployed in the Donbas area.

While listening to arguments from "the other side" today, there was a full denial that Belorussia had been involved at all. There were no need to involve Belorussia, Belorussia does not hold a big army, and after all, the distance to Russia is not so far. There is no proof that Russian army crossed the border with Belorussia, nobody has seen that. But there was no denial that Chernobyl had been occupied by the Russians.

The common Russian seems to be in total denial of simple facts. It should suffice to look at the map - it simply isn't possible to deploy large amounts of heavy military equipment on the west bank of Dnepr without going through Belorussian territory. Perhaps in this alternative reality, Chernobyl and all the other places on the west bank that was occupied by the Russians was taken by paratroopers. I didn't ask explicitly ... just got told that one cannot trust the photos, it could easily be Ukrainian tanks labelled with a Z or V.

I hear a lot more stories ... and there may be a nugget of truth in some of them ... but that Russian military was not going through Belorussia when launching the attack towards Kyiv, that seems to me to be a very obvious denial of facts, the biggest denial of facts that I've heard so far.
