Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is an adventure comedy film that stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. It's a sequel that directly ties into the original movie, but takes place 21 years after it's events. The movie opens by introducing the four new characters who will end up interacting with the game. Spencer is an unpopular, nerdy high school kid that is trying to make friends by helping people cheat on their tests. Fridge Johnson is tall and athletic, but needs help with his grades so he hires Spencer to help him cheat. They get caught and end up in detention.
Bethany Walker is the hot popular girl who gets in trouble for disrespecting her English teacher, and Martha Kaply wont participate in Gym class. The two of them also get detention, and end up joining Spencer and Fridge in there. Spencer, Fridge, Bethany, and Martha have to clean the school's dingy basement for their detention, and while they are in the process of doing so they come across Jumanji. Originally Jumanji was a board game, but since 21 years has passed it knows that kids aren't into those anymore, so it magically turns itself into a videogame. The four kids find this game and decide to play it while they're in detention.

Once they turn it on the game prompts them to choose a character to begin. As soon as they all pick someone they suddenly get sucked into the game world, and now they all find themselves in the jungle of Jumanji. What makes this movie a good sequel is the fact that they changed these fundamental things, instead of the game world coming to them, they get brought into the game world. Not only that, but now they are no longer in their own bodies, they're in the bodies of the characters they chose at the beginning of the game. This gives the film a fresh set of ideas to play with, and creates the interesting dynamic of these kids taking on entirely new personas from who they are in real life. That's where most of the humor comes from, and it's what makes the film work so well.
Spencer, the skinny nerd, is now The Rock, who is the complete opposite of himself. Fridge, the big football player, is now Kevin Hart, who is half his size. Martha, the shy frumpy girl, is now a badass hot chick, and Bethany, the popular girl who can't stop taking selfies, is now Jack Black. All the actors who take over from here do a great job of staying true to their real life personalities. The Rock isn't a generic brave guy, he's still scared of everything just like Spencer. Jack Black does the best job of portraying his real life character, and plays a convincing teenage girl who is mostly just concerned about her phone and social media status.

Now that they're in the game they have to beat it to get out, and just like any videogame certain characters have certain abilities that must be used accordingly. They have to figure out what they're good at and work together to get through the games levels if they want to have any chance of escaping. Also just like a videogame, they all have a certain number of lives before it's game over. Something happens to one of them right when they first get into the game where they end up dying. After a moment they fall down from the sky unharmed, but they notice that one of their lives are gone so they have to be more careful.
All throughout the film they are reminded that they're in a game. There are NPC's, or non playable characters, who can only deliver one line of dialog. So if someone asks them a question the NPC just keeps repeating the same thing and walks away. These little nods will be picked up on by anyone who plays videogames, and it helps to give this movie a distinct theme that's different from the original. With the new rules that they must abide by, and the funny dynamic of these kids getting used to their new bodies, there's a lot of humorous moments to be had. The pacing of the film is well done and keeps you entertained right from the start, and it even offers some touching scenes where the characters gain new perspective and learn to work together.

There are some problems to be found that I have to mention. First of all the villain isn't that great, he's a guy who can control the creatures of the jungle, and is after something the group has. He's not terrible, but he's not memorable in any way either. Kevin Hart, although I find him to be funny in his standup, pretty much just plays himself the whole time. All of the others do a great job of staying true to the personalities of their real life counterparts, while Kevin just seemed like Kevin. Then you have the various plot holes, which I wont get into specifically so I don't spoil anything, and my final complaint is that they used too much CGI with the visual effects. Sometimes it's not that bad, but other times it's very noticeable.
Most of my issues with the film are pretty minor, especially because of the type of film this is. This is not a serious movie that requires an airtight plot, nor is it a gritty action movie where you want every little thing to feel realistic. It's a fun family comedy about four kids who get sucked into a videogame, and it kept me entertained the whole time despite it's flaws. The group of kids you get to see at the beginning even had good chemistry, and I would of liked to of had more time with them, but overall I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the film. This is something that anybody, young or old, will be able to have fun with thanks to the great performances of the main actors, and I give Jumaji: Welcome To The Jungle a grade of........................................
