For years now Jamaican authorities have been helping illicit cannabis growers make their way into the legal market in an effort to gain control of cannabis economic activities.
There are a variety of cannabis farmers on the island and many foreign investors who have looked to set up shop here and get a piece of the cannabis action.
This has left Rastafarians and traditional farmers looking at the legal market like a regime because they are losing profit to corporations and that profit is something they've relied on for decades. Their natural rights are also being squashed with legislative restrictions surrounding cannabis growing and activity.
There are already dozens of licenses that have been given away on the island and if there are only so many to go around then they will also face accusations of an unfair or corrupt system of legalization, like other regions have too.
This is because the traditional and local farmers don't want to see foreign and corporate investors take their place when they need that money and opportunity to feed their families. And if they get a 'no' to their effort and application when those other investors get a 'yes,' with no clear and transparent explanation as to why that is then it's an issue they might not easily let go of.
Jamaica has been one of the best places in the world to grow outdoor weed and some of the best cannabis in the world is believed to originate from here; the older strains that were smoked decades ago which some are trying to bring back now.
With weather issues, increased cannabis consumption on the island, and fewer farmers to grow, this has caused a potential weed shortage in Jamaica.
COVID-19 restrictions also prohibited farmers from taking care of their fields and doing their farming chores that they usually do at night. Some farmers have lost thousands of dollars already. Along with the stress that COVID-19 brought for many it also meant that more people were consuming cannabis on the island, and more of it, this has increased that consumption demand.
If they want to solidify their position as a top cannabis travel destination and market then they will need to fix this problem and open the door for more growing.
