I need to try the trick where you steady the stick with your left hand to make the tacks. That must be one of the things you learn when you take a welding class. I just sort of muddle along by trial and error.
Yes it is a technique we picked up at collage and like most things the more you practice the better you get. One thing that we did do early on to get the the feel and positioning of your hands is to run a few fake passes with the power off on your welder this allows you to see clearly were you are and find a position that's comfortable for you.
