Der Winter ist kalt!
Als Mensch empfindet man kalte Füße als unangenehm. Man zieht sich dicke Wollsocken an, oder trägt gefütterte Stiefel, um die eigenen Füße warm zu halten. Aber wie machen das eigentlich die Vögel, die draußen barfuß durch den Schnee hüpfen, oder oftmals nahezu bewegungslos auf dem Eis sitzen? Immerhin hat ein Vogel mit etwa 40 °C eine sogar noch höhere Körpertemperatur als der Mensch.
Die Antwort ist natürlich einfach, und das dahinter steckende Konzept - wie so vieles in der Natur - genial.
Vögel haben von Natur aus kalte Füße. Sie haben eine Art Wärmetauscher in ihren Beinen, ein fein verzweigtes Netz aus Blutbahnen. Das warme Blut das vom Körper in die Füße fließt erwärmt das kalte Blut das von den Füßen zurück in den Körper fließt. Auf diese Art gekühlt, kommen Vogelfüße im Winter auf eine Temperatur von unter 1°C.
Und so empfinden sie es auch nicht als kalt, da der Temperaturunterschied zwischen Fuß und Untergrund gering ist.
Gleichzeitig spart es Energie, schließlich muss die Kontaktstelle mit dem kalten Untergrund nicht "beheizt" werden. Und die Winterzeit ist eine Zeit der Nahrungsknappheit, da ist Energie natürlich ein Kostbares Gut. Das Ganze hat aber noch einen überlebenswichtigen Vorteil für den Vogel, mit warmen Füßen würde er nämlich ruck zuck auf dem Eis festfrieren.
Eigentlich nicht wirklich witzig...
