International Women’s Day

It is held on March 8th each year to celebrate women’s economic, political, and cultural achievements.Of gender equality’s major issues, sexual harassment has become a top issue over the past year, being searched 99% more in the last 12 months, compared to to the year before.ndtan_net_free_iStockphoto_475912236.jpg

Among the numerous movements in various branches of labor which have been inaugurated within the past week, none is more worthy of serious and abiding notice, or sadder, than that of the working woman. We say sadder because while almost every branch of man's work, striking for enhancement of wages, will be successful, that of women will be, as always heretofore, a fruitless effort.

The reason for this is simple. The remuneration for labor must always be graduated by the supply, and the supply of female labor is always greater than the demand, especially so at the present time. That this is so, is not the fault of women. Men monopolize all avenues of profitable labor, and throw women too much upon the needle, and upon such branches as require little or no skill in acquisition. The result is that those branches are over-crowded, and woman competes against a woman, until her remuneration is cut down, not only to the lowest living point but below it. There is no natural law by which the labor of woman should be less productive than that of man when her physical wants are quite equal. The great and only cause is that woman is crowded away from her proper employment by man, and those occupations which should be here by right, which are consonant with her physical structure and strength, are seized by hands that should be tilling the earth, or, at the present moment, grasping the musket.

There are a thousand branches of mechanical labor suited to a woman -- branches that require more manual dexterity than bodily strength, more watchfulness than skill, and that especially appeal to woman's attention. It is the same in trade; women could occupy the positions of sellers in shops, and fill many of the numberless places now filled by men in the retail trade. We would ask that portion of the fairer sex who are raised above the necessity of laboring for a living, whether a pang has not sometimes crossed their bosoms upon entering a dry goods establishment and finding stalwart men measuring silks and ribbons behind the counter, when they remember that thousands of their own sex , standing on the brink of ruin, could be saved by the same employment. If they have not thought of it, let them show themselves true women, by commencing to think and talk of it.
