Women's History Month intends to honor, inspire, educate, unite and promote women in the face of forces intent on subjugating and silencing them. It is about those who overcame overt and imbedded assumptions and prejudice to be their best selves. RGB said it well:
“I ask no favor for my sex. All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks.”
DAY 28: ROBIN ROBERTS
(Images from Wikipedia Commons)
Newscaster, sportscaster, producer. Vaulted into the public spotlight as a sportscaster for ESPN, followed by Good Morning America. Courageously shared her battles with breast cancer and bone marrow disease. Integrity personified.
Robin has a beautiful resilience about her, which I suspect has something to do with her parents cultivating “the three D’s: discipline, determination, and da’ Lord.”
She was an amazing athlete that excelled in basketball, earning her a spot in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She has also courageously shared her battles with breast cancer and bone marrow disease, or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a type of cancer, which has won the hearts and gratitude of many. The public journey has raised bone marrow registrations, for which she was awarded the Arthur Ashe and Sager Strong Awards.
Degreed in Communications, Robin entered broadcasting after college as a sports anchor and reporter in 1983. By 2005, she was a sportscaster on the nationwide ESPN channel. Her projects diversified both there and for the nationwide parent new company, ABC, co-anchoring the #1 rated Good Morning America show. Her broad-ranging talents have led her to lead coverage for royal weddings, catastrophe coverage, and as a guest host for the quiz show Jeopardy.
Speaking to our human flaws is never easy. Robin helped to normalize the conversation, reduce the stigma, and in my mind, has likely saved lives by doing so. She was honored with a Peabody Award for the way she engaged with the public on this issue.
