My older brother is visiting so...

in #woodworking2 years ago

We've been working on setting up a second CNC machine and finishing some guitar builds. Why? Well, because mid life crisis is kicking in, I guess, and he too feels like we should get happening.

I little while ago I shared on this very blog that I had found an interesting wood species to make a guitar fret-board out of. The locals call it Chonta and it sure is something special in my book.

Its hard enough that the natives would use the wood to craft weapons. If you can believe such a thing. So, after a lot of hand tool work, followed by very careful machining, we finished a neck. (aside from fretting, which I'm working on at the moment).

I think it looks pretty spiffy if I may say so myself. The inlays are made out of cedar dowel I made on my lathe. I sincerely hope to finish this guitar before the month ends, and of course, I will show the result on here.

That being said, having both CNCs working has me pretty excited. It's like having two assistants that don't complain too much (too much is key). They of course, can betray me and do at times, but that seems to happen only when I don't take the right precautions. I'm learning to be a lot more methodical in my workflow.

Enough writing... back to the shop!

Sort:

Spiffy chonta. Quite singular, and apparently robust.

Thanks!
