WordPress statistics to support the need for SteemConnect as a WordPress plugin

in #wordpress8 years ago (edited)

The following statistics aim to show the prevalence of WordPress on the Web which will then hopefully support the need for SteemConnect as a WordPress plugin.

WordPress share of all websites

There are over 1 billion websites on the Web.

By "Website" we mean unique hostname (a name which can be resolved, using a name server, into an IP Address).
It must be noted that around 75% of websites today are not active, but parked domains or similar.

Hostnames on the Web appear as domain names or subdomain names.

WordPress is used to build over:

  • 5% of the entire Web (over 18 million out of over 370 million global domains)
  • 29% of the top million websites (actually just over 800 thousand)
  • 22% for the top 100 thousand
  • 25% for the top 10 thousand

WordPress is used by over 28% of the top 10 million websites monitored by w3techs.com.

https://w3techs.com/technologies/details/cm-wordpress/all/all

The top 10 million websites are as per popularity rankings provided by Alexa.com using a 3 months average ranking. Subdomains are not considered as separate websites and redirected domains are excluded.

Because our definition of "website" differs a bit from Alexa's definition, the "top 10 million" websites are actually less than 10 million. However, this has no statistical significance.

WordPress.com also has a similar figure but they mistakenly say it is a percentage of the Internet and not the Web.

WordPress powers 28% of the internet.

WordPress share of Content Management System (CMS) websites

A 30% share of websites using CMS technologies is what is stated by builtwith.com, while w3techs.com states the share to be more than 59%. Some CMSs included by builtwith.com are not included by w3techs.com and as such they seem to have different but overlapping definitions for CMS.

Google Trends indicates that WordPress is significantly more popular than its closest rivals according to w3techs.com.

Google Trends also indicates that the term WordPress is even more popular than the term blockchain, steem or steemit, but a spike for the term bitcoin in May 2017 resulted in bitcoin surpassing WordPress.

WordPress share of all blog posts

A quick estimate using information from internetlivestats.com indicates that there are about 5 million blog posts per day.

http://www.internetlivestats.com/watch/blog-posts

WordPress.com states that there were more than 83 million WordPress (blog) posts in May 2017 from WordPress sites hosted by WordPress.com and those using their Jetpack plugin. 83 million posts per month comes to over 2.5 million posts per day. That is about half of all 5 million blog posts per day.

Add in the nearly 0.5 million pages per day and the nearly 1.5 million comments (replies) per day, and the result is about 4.5 WordPress posts of any kind per day.

WordPress share of all Google searches

According to internetlivestats.com, there are currently about 105 billion global monthly searches.

http://www.internetlivestats.com/google-search-statistics

2.7 million global monthly searches for WordPress
WordPress-related terms (including those for “wp,” a common abbreviation for WordPress) receive somewhere between 10 and 100 million global searches every month

WordPress and WordPress-related terms account for about 0.1% of all Google searches.

I think plugins are there..Yah didn't use it but came to know from an article

Existing STEEM WordPress Plugins

Plugins like Steemit Feed by @wordpress-tips have limited functionality and do not allow interaction with the STEEM blockchain from the WordPress website. For example, you cannot upvote a post from the WordPress website.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/steemit-feed/

I am proposing something more comprehensive like the Facebook WordPress Plugin but for the STEEM blockchain. For example, with this Facebook plugin you can like a post from the WordPress website without going to Facebook.com.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/facebook/

SteemConnect already facilitates this kind of decentralised interaction with the STEEM blockchain, but the SteemConnect code is not nicely packaged into an easy to install WordPress plugin.
