I have always enjoyed remote working, the idea of going to work daily at a particular time and then you never know what comes in just when you are about to leave the office and then you have late working hours, deciding what to wear every day, carrying food tiffin, wasting so much time in commuting, all of this I find it quite a headache. When I was working in proper full-time job, my company Accenture did have this facility. But it was to be only availed when needed and not any time. Whenever I had any emergency situation at home, I would do work from home, that not only helped me take care of the home matters but also saved my leave days.
My mothers-in-law health was not keeping very well in those days, so remote working helped me a lot in taking care of her as well as attending my job. Also, I would save around 2 hours of travel time, which saved me not only with the time but also the travel exhaustion and not to miss the money part. I saved on the cab fares every day I did not travel to work and did work from home. I could attend my son's school meeting without taking a leave, and so many small jobs could be done. I felt like it was a blessing. If I had to go to my son's school, I would pick up the lunch time, and request my boss to consider if I got a little delayed. Then I would make up for that time by working a little late.

Thankfully my office did consider all of these things, provided the job was getting done, and I was good at my job so they never had any problem. No matter what, I would never miss my deliverables. When I shifted to Oman, my company tried to work out something for me with remote working and retain me, but somehow it did not fit me and I took the call of quitting it completely. Sometimes you have to let go off good things also. I always say that I have been very happy working in all by jobs, because I always had these flexibilities.
But then with all of this there were some disadvantages also of remote working. I would feel disconnected socially with my office colleagues. If there were some technical issues it was hard to sort it out, because then it was everything on the call. The biggest challenge is the boundaries at home, family thinks if you are home, you are available all the time, but that's not the case. So, at times it becomes difficult to draw the boundaries between work and family life. And the routine would also go haywire. There were times when I would end up working more than what I would in office. So, all these challenges were there, but still I felt that the benefits were more and it gave me lot of advantages. I saved a lot of leave days and that allowed me to take extended family holidays.
This facility offers both convenience and challenges. I believe that it needs a good structuring and discipline and create an environment at home which does not disturb you and allows you to operate smoothly even from home space.
