RE: Exploring the Pyramids of Giza

in #worldmappin3 days ago

May I ask what happened? There were many attacks on tourists in the past, which is why the presence of security forces was increased extremely. In Luxor I saw even more than in Cairo, everywhere military or armed police to see every few meters. I would describe Egypt as generally safe, but with restriction, which is why I would not recommend it for travel beginners to be honest. There are many tricks or scammers, but this only refers to the tourist areas and the best thing someone can do is, like me, to meet locals who are totally open. I was even invited to a wedding and have experienced that Egyptians are extremely open. However, you still have to be careful, a few things have happened to me that were kind of strange, which is why I would describe it partly as unsafe, but if someone knows these tricks it is safe. However, everything is better than sitting around in some tourist resort and having nothing of the culture :)

I don't even recall what year it was, but Al Qaeda attacked a bunch of tourists at the pyramids themselves gunning down a lot of innocent people down. Ever since then the security has become much tighter, but at the time I was sill part of the US Army. Travel to Egypt was banned for us after that, so I never had a chance to reschedule.

It's like any middle eastern country (even though it's in Africa), you have to be careful. Many people are very kind but there are also those that would do you harm. I spent enough time in Iraq to get to know the culture well!

Interesting to hear this impact, I know you have to be really careful but I haven’t heard anything about these attacks before. In Luxor there was an attack years ago and since then the present has also been greatly increased, every 50 meters there is Military with the machine gun. Wow Iraq, it must have been a great experience and very similar, Arab countries already have a special flair!
