Visiting the National Garden and Parliament in Athens

Hey dear Hiveans and friends of travelling, as always I hope that you are all doing well so far and have a week which is full of interesting experiences! Today I would like to share something about a unique travel experience that I made during my stay in Athens.

It's always a pleasure to visit places close to nature and so I did not want to miss the National Garden in Athens of which I learned through a recommendation and in addition, I also visited the Parliament which is located near the garden. On the day of my visit, the garden was unfortunately closed because there were some protests in Athens that day and it was closed for safety, so I used the next day to visit this historic garden which is existing for almost 200 years. The entrance to the facility is free of charge and there are plenty of places of retreat where visitors can relax and in addition to the otherwise rather stressful urban climate, this is probably the most central place in Athens where nature can be experienced. The garden is located near the Syntagma Square which has an important historical background and is also connected with the history of Bavaria and was created by King Otto (1815 - 1867) from the house of the Wittelsbachs and is also associated with the national constitution. At that time, the Bavarian king set himself the goal of improving much of the Greek infrastructure and decided to create facilities in various areas that were of great importance for the growth of the country, but this turned out to be very difficult because there were many problems in Greece at that time and the Bavarian ruler did not had it easy.

In the national garden there are numerous different paths which are surrounded by thousands of trees as well as plants and during the way, I was able to see many different types of animals and as it is typical in Athens, also saw one or the other cat as well as in other places of the city. So that the visitors in the large facility do not get lost, there are maps in different areas to find the way around and the facility is also very clean and I have noticed that great importance is placed on care in order to offer the visitors the best possible experience. The garden was not always accessible to the public and during the 20th century it was decided to open it to everyone and can be visited daily from morning to evening and especially those who want to escape this hectic climate of the big city will find the perfect place here.

On the same day I also visited the parliament which was extremely interesting because the guards regularly carry out their traditional change which is a kind of ceremony and there is also an important history behind it. The guards are also known under the name Evzones and always change at the full hour and it has been a very special experience to watch how this is carried out and also represents the pride of the guards towards their country and it's also an important change for the national guardians to the otherwise very quiet positions in which they have to spend a long time. The clothing of the Evzones is also particularly interesting and behind the guards also hides a deep symbolism which is supposed to represent pride and freedom and the change is not only intended to entertain the visitors but a profound ceremony which is also held in honour of those who have left their lives for the country. Unfortunately, the parliament cannot otherwise be visited from the inside, but I have learned that it may be possible to take a look inside on request, but I can't say more about it, but I think it is necessary to register for a longer time before. If you are in Athens, you should definitely not miss these two unique places and near Syntagma Square there are also some opportunities to meet traditional Greek cuisine, which of course should not be missed on a visit to Athens and it is also the perfect change to the hectic climate of the city.

What a beautiful place. I have never made it to Greece, but it's on the list. Thanks for sharing the pictures and history. I love those kind of places with so much beautiful plant life! The ducks are a nice touch too!

I can highly recommend how I visit to visit it in the off-season, it's much quieter and cooler than during the summer times. I hope you will realise your trip soon :) Greece is so diverse in many respects @thebighigg

IT'S GOOD TO KNOW AND IT'S A NICE TOUR. GREETINGS

It motivates me very much that you like my blog :)

The images are great

Thank you so much for your kind feedback :) @dominic1

it's a nice garden and it's even free!

for parliament they prolly need security measures...i never understood why the ball on the shoes of guards 😂

You said that well, it’s so important to have a natural place of retreat! The garden is like a kind of heart of the city. That's true, it was very well guarded, various security forces were set up all around the site. That's a good question :) It’s an important part of the culture which is also full of symbolism and these shoes are also known as tsarouchia.

Beautiful National Garden, my friend, as well as the Parliament of Greece, it was certainly a trip that you could have taken advantage of by making your publications showing the best images in photographs of your trip to the country, which undoubtedly has many interesting things to show us.

I am also happy to see that you participate so actively in my contributions with your regularly comments. I see you are very interested in this culture, I hope your trip to Greece is coming soon!
