"This is not happening," he muttered disbelievingly. Shaking his head, he opened his eyes again, and looked at her. She was still lying there, looking pale and sickly.
"What did I do last night?"
He was afraid to go anywhere near her, but he decided he had little choice. He took a deep breath, and reaching out, lightly touched her forehead. Her flesh was cold, like ice.
"Ok, this is some kind of joke. Wake up, dear, wake up!"
He watched her chest, waiting for it to move up or down. Nothing.
He couldn't wait any longer. "I'm taking our daughter to school. You'll be fine. Just wait here. I'll be back a few hours, maybe."
Reluctantly, he grabbed her bag, slipped into his coat, and headed out the door.
He woke up in the middle of the street, the contents of his stomach rolling out of his mouth into the gutter. He was dizzy, disoriented. His head ached, and his eyes burned fiercely. He looked up, and saw police blocking the road.
In the distance he heard a siren. He ran to the nearest storefront.
"Need a doctor, man. Need a doctor," he wheezed.
"Just hold on, sir. I'll call an ambulance for you."
He glanced at his hands. They were covered in blood. "Don't you need to go to the hospital, man?"
"There is no need for that. I'm an EMT. The hospital is more than half a mile down the road."
"What the... did I just hit a deer?"
"You're too far away to have hit anything. You should be in no pain. All right? Thank you for your cooperation."
As the patrolman walked away, he turned to look at the building he was in front of. The back doors swung open, and out came a relatively young man. The man opened his coat, revealing a brand new, thick leather jacket.
"Dude, did you just walk out of a garbage bag?"
The leather jacket, with one hand, pulled out a revolver from inside of his coat. He closed the back door, and looked directly at the man. "You're looking at a long, fine career in prison, just by messing with me. Keep your damn eyes, and that talk to yourself." He pulled the trigger.
The cylinder spun, sending a bullet straight into the forehead of the stunned man, before the cylinder landed on an empty chamber.
The shooter took a deep drag of his cigarette, and walked up the revolving door into the building.
Hours later, he came back, and had the garbage bags thrown into the back of his vehicle.
"Hey, you're about to go into a store. Do not touch anything on the floor. This is a robber, he isn't a very good one. Get in the driver's side. Stay there. Don't do anything else. Remember, the gun was empty before I shot the man."
After another pause.
"I'll get there when I get there. He'll have to be here all day for me to show up. You know how these things go. Anyway, I have information that he is preparing to rob a store, just like it's the third world. The gun is unloaded. He has no idea how to use it. Get in the car."
The man got in.
"Good. Now. You need to make sure that you don't do what I'm about to do. Our lives are on the line, and you're the only person who can save the day. Understood?"
"...Yes."
"Good. Remember, the gun was empty. You were paralysed. The gun wasn't loaded. That's why you didn't stop me. My gun wasn't loaded. You said you knew how these things go. I didn't say anything."
"I won't say anything. I'll shut my mouth, you know."
"That's right. You won't tell a soul about this."
"Not a syllable."
"Good. Can I trust you? You're a good man?"
"Of course. I'm one of the good guys. You're safe with me."
"Fine. Here's how this will work. You'll only live one more day, but it will be enough time. Remember, this is very important."
He nodded, as he stepped out of the door. After checking the car, he went back inside the hotel.
