Premeditated lives

"Hey sweetie, look! There's our future house," you say, pointing to the two-story home. The interior has a two-bedroom floor plan, and features a large, open living room, and a vaulted-ceilinged kitchen and dining area. The house is "easy" to clean, inside and out, and the backyard is large enough to have an extra play area for the kids. "It's nice, don't you think?" you ask as you take your fiance's hand. He nods, smiling. "It's perfect," he whispers.

As you just start to move forward and begin going through the process of getting the house, your best friend, Sally, calls. "Hey, Lil!" she says, in her energetic voice. "Guess what?" you ask her. "I got a promotion!" she replies. "That's awesome, Sally. I'm so happy for you." You are; Sally has worked hard to get where she is now, and you're so proud of her. "I got a huge raise, and now I can afford an apartment of my own. You and John can move in here and leave the tiny apartment you're in now!"

A few days later, you and John arrive at Sally's apartment. "So, this is it. It's pretty small, but it's pretty all the same," she says as you walk in. You put the bags down, and you and John look around you. It's a pretty basic apartment, with one kitchen, bathroom, closet, and one larger room for the living room. You've lived in worse, and you'll be fine. "I'm gonna go. Ashley's waiting for me in her car. Talk to you later, Lil," Sally says, and you say goodbye as she heads out the door.

Two months later, you and John have just moved into Sally's apartment. The wedding is coming up in a month, and you're making the plans. John's family is coming, as well as a few of your former college friends. Everything is looking great so far.

Three days before your wedding, you decide that you don't want to go through with it anymore. You know that it's a big decision, but you just don't feel the same way about John as you used to. The more you think about it, the more you know this decision is the right one.

You call Sally up and ask her if you and John can stay another night. She says yes, and when you get there, you tell her what's on your mind. "You called me here for this?!" she says, shocked by your decision. "I love John, but I don't love him," you tell her. "What are you going to do about your fiancé?" she asks. "I don't know; maybe I can send him away or something. He said he was going to take the whole month off for our wedding, so it shouldn't be too hard," you reply, without much thought.

A few days later, you're sitting in Sally's living room, waiting for John to come back. He says that he's going to be home a lot later than usual, so you're going to help Sally with something while she's making dinner. One of her friends, Rebecca, really wants someone to watch over the man she has hired to do some work in her new house. You get the idea, and agree to do so.

When John gets home, he's a lot more talkative. He claims that he's going to be home a lot earlier than usual; he can't wait to see you. All of the sudden, he's hugged you tightly, so you ask him what's wrong. He tells you that he doesn't love you anymore, and tells you he's not going to marry you. He asks you to go in the bedroom, and then calls you in a few minutes later.

"I'm leaving now," he says, and walks to the door. You feel like you have heard this before. Then he pauses. "Where are you going?" you ask. You feel like he has heard this before too. He grumbles a little, then looks at you. "I can't believe you're doing this! You're going to marry me before you go through with this!" Yes, he has heard this before. It still doesn't make much sense. Why is he so worried? Before you can say anything else, he's gone, and you're standing in your wedding dress, in Sally's living room.

For the next week, you decide to run away. You don't want to see anyone, so you stay at Sally's for the whole week. On the last day, John shows up at the door. "Where are you going?" he asks you. "Get away from me!" you scream at him. You don't know why; something about the way that he's talking to you has made you angry. "Lil, I know you're upset, but we need to work this out. If you're not going to marry me, you have to go through with the planning at least," he says to you, holding out a car's keys. You look at them, then at him. "Well?" he demands. You take the keys, and look down. "I don't know," you say. You know that it's the right thing to do, but you don't feel like it is. John is really upset, and almost starts crying. "Lil, you don't know what you're talking about. You're not running away. You're coming with me!"

The next night, before we get to that point, let's talk about Sally's brother Mike. Mike is a great guy, but not especially attractive. He has bad skin, curly brown hair, and a love of football. For the most part, he doesn't have any important friends, but he's a good person. He's the best person you've ever met.
