The aurathonian city of Luboel is a proud metropolis that has, or at least had, a long and prosperous history, but it was never beautiful. With towering buildings sprouting from the ground like mushrooms and covering every possible inch of the terrain with only a few boulevards for passage, it was certainly crowded; but it was also dark, dirty, and unsightly. The working class lived in apartments in the apartment buildings that were never tall enough to have windows that faced the outside. The councilmen lived in their own spires, nearly one hundred meters in the air. The sidewalks were just wide enough for two people to pass. Along with the bright signs and city lights that shined from every corner, there were large symbols of the city on almost every building, in every street, and on almost every path. They were built to be an unspoken reminder of the past triumphs of the city. They were built of stone in the shape of the family crest of the city, one that is now more commonly used for advertising, rather than decoration.
At the bottom, middle, and top of every high building, there was a king. Their position was unknown to the commoners. Though they made the laws of the city and allocated the tax money, they were really only a vassal of the seven families who still controlled the city. A council of these families met regularly to decide how the city would be run and who would be in their council. The king at the top of every building was where the councilmen would meet for their meetings in secret. The king on top of the Luboel Cathedral had their meetings in a large room with tables and comfortable chairs along the edges of the room. In the middle of this room, there was a large round table with seats for each councilman. A large emblem, almost three meters tall, stood in the center of this table with the family crests of each councilman.
The councilmen were warriors. Some wielded axes, some swords, and others maces. Every now and then, one or two would have a magical weapon, but for the most part, they weren't that different from other warriors. Over the course of the city's history, a certain weapon was passed around from generation to generation to generation. Through wars, the battles where the famous weapons had been forged were forgotten. Once a new king was crowned, he would pass it along to the next king, and the one after that, and so on.
However deeply it was forged, each sword was made up of the same blade, the same handle, and the same crossguard, and the same hilt. They were all forged of adamantium, the same type of metal God created on day one. The hilt was the only part that changed for each blade. The icons of the city took different forms on the handle. There were four different symbols on the hilt of each sword: the symbol of the city's founding family, the symbol of the current family, the emblem of the city, and the emblem of the aurathonian army. Each emblem represented a part of the history of the city and the purpose it played.
The king of the Luboel army was the most decorated king in the city's history. The army had existed for as long as the city. Four years earlier, the king of the city had received news that the army's greatest hour had come and was about to end. There was a new king who would bring back the past glory of the army. For some reason, the king of the army was very anti-Luboel. He had waged many armed campaigns against Luboel, and planned to continue. The king of the Luboel army, after receiving this news, was outraged. He immediately arranged a meeting with the king of the Luboel city, and demanded that he notify the current king that they had a traitor within their army and that they would have to be dealt with before they threatened the entirety of aurathon, according to the last council meeting held that year. The king of the Luboel city agreed to the king of the army's terms.
The army was made up of seven thousand men. The king of the Luboel city, commander of all aurathonian armies, had only four thousand men at his and his family's disposal. In order for the two kings to agree to an alliance, they would have to make a deal. The king of the Luboel city would secretly leave a part of his army and number of people to rule over the army during the king of the army's absence. This king would be known as the "Prince of the Luboel city" and would be the one in charge of the army when the king of the Luboel city returned. It seemed like a good deal for both armies.
The current "prince" of the Luboel city was five years older than the current king of the Luboel city. He was a very intelligent young man. He believed that he could do something for the city before the current king became king. In the center of the city, in the courtyard of the Grand Temple of Luboel, there was an everlasting festival. The first week of every month, the king of the Luboel city would choose a city dandelion and challenge the people who were with him to a duels. The loser said that it was the best way to eliminate the "Riavinne," (meaning a lack of ambition or urgency, an adj. of laziness; with an accompanying sense of being lazy,) from the city's meridian. The word "Riavinne" was derived from the word "right." Many believed that the decline of the city and the exodus of thousands of Auratians to better cities had been caused by the decline of meaning in the city's spirit, and thus, the lack of ambition and urgency that was in the city. The ceremony was held in the Grand Temple in front of the courtyard. The Luboelian prince's competitions with other cities: Adua, Dwimor, Kuo, and the like, had all been won by the Luboel city.
Even though the "prince" of the Luboel city was young, he was driven by ambition. Patrolling the streets constantly, assembling weapons, and even armor. In the beginning, he did all of this just to keep a low profile, and in hopes that the king of the Luboel city might favor him someday. However, he soon understood the power that came with the aura of leadership. He knew that one day, the time would come when the king of the Luboel city's time would come to an end.
