Writing was always my love too. Although I am a damn good developer and enjoy the work, it's different and not what I see finishing my life doing. But it's what I had to do to support my family. A few years ago I published a book and started writing again almost daily. You are right. It is something I should have never given up on.
It is possible to do both these days until the writing can provide you a good living. It's a struggle but it is possible!
