I think we look down upon prostitution so much because we don't want to accept that humans are simply driven by sex, its like the feeling of regret people get after they have had sex. Many see sex as an intimate thing, others as disgusting and by many as something that is just fun. I think it depends on how you have been raised - open minded or closed
