Can it also be nonfiction books? I have almost finished writing a small e-book that is a collection of short humourous essays on family life. I was going to publish through Amazon. This seems interesting to me.

Yes, it can be any genre of writing! It's a free self-publishing platform, there is even someone interested in publishing magazines on there! You should definitely check them out at DBooks.org.
