I feel like if more people realized this, they would no longer be so frightened of putting human lives in the hands of AI.
I think people are frightened of place lives in the hands of AI not only due to moral issues, but also performance issues. AIs such as the self-driving cars are able to perform excellently on some days. However, these cars with the same AIs perform poorly sometimes and often result in car crash as well as a significant number of recorded death. It's not like human drivers aren't killing people through road accidents, but the thought of a robots or AIs adding more petrol to the fire frightens people.
