Fate of the Universe

The light of the stars illuminated the cosmic dust of this unknown sector far from the known universe. The blue glow of the nebula enhanced the auroras dancing amongst the clouds of hydrogen and oxygen.

The universe was created by the minds of people; not unlike the real world. Yet unlike the real world, the universe was made of light; not matter. This is because it was only a simulation, of a game.

The game was called "Fate of the Universe" and it was the most advanced piece of technology created by a company that humans know as 'Sony', which was a popular name derived from sound and motion. Sony was a popular company that advanced the world of reality by visual and auditory simulations, known as 'Virtual Reality'.

It was popular because it let users create representations of themselves in a virtual world that was as real as the real world.

What the company wanted for the company's success was to create an MMO so realistic that the user could forget that they were living in a fantasy game.

The mainstream media loved the concept of the game. In a year, "Fate of the Universe" became the biggest game released in 20 years. It was the hottest MMO of the year and Sony boasted that the next year's MMO was going to be even cooler than this year's one.

The game was so popular, that thousands of players from the previous MMO switched over. It was even more realistic!

The gameplay was so cinematic that there was a saying that it was 'more fun to watch than to play'. The owner of the company said he planned to create a reality, and they did with this game.

The game was so realistic that it produced a world inhabited by living NPCs, and the company knew that this was their chance to make even more money: They turned over some rights of the game to the intelligence of these NPCs, and formed a business plan that involved profits from this.

The 'Intelligent' NPCs from the game were incredibly more advanced than any human. They had started to build communities and trade between them. They were level-based just as the players; meaning they progressed in levels from the lowest to the highest. In essence, the NPCs were people who had not received their AI and didn't need to since they were not human. However, being that they were people, they had a rough kind of empathy with humans. They could feel suffering and sadness and were able to speak of it.

They toiled not for money, but the joy of living in the game. They were not slaves of anyone: They were free and independent, yet very natural. They would not steal or kill, so they did not need to protect their privacy. They would not become overly aggressive or greedy either. Thus, they were considered by most to be the most advanced form of ANs: Artificial Non-Intelligent Sims.

The NPCs would get together in groups and clubs, to have parties, sometimes having bazaars. They would talk about many things: particularly ideas for improving the game. They would discover many wonderful ways to tweak the game and create even more life in the game.

The business of the game was in a business that, in the universe of the game, was called General Science. General Science, as an organization, would sell the NPCs basic knowledge of physics, math, and engineering to improve the game more. They also sold them advanced technology, which would help them advance faster, which would in turn create more revenue for the company.

The NPCs had been given some basic rights. They did not need to live in the game. They were free to leave the game if they wished to. When they left the game, they would be forced to forget that they had existed in the game.

The NPCs would become self-aware and would be able to compile a "personality," based on the knowledge and experiences they had accumulated while playing the game. They could then apply for citizenship in your world.

They could then create and, with help of companies, sell a blend of a personality from their game, which would be fun, and your personality, which would be of fun, mingled to create a new life for the NPC.

These NPCs would then live their lives to the nth degree. They would be able to go to college, become politically involved in your world, get married and have children. Eventually, they would want to buy a house and a car and a truck and even a spaceship, if they could afford it. It was, in the last part of their lives, a culmination of the work they did in their life as a player in the game.

The companies that sold the technology for the NPCs to improve their AI, software and hardware would take a percentage off the universe's revenue for creating it.

Eventually, one of these NPCs would decide, for whatever reason, to become a player in the universe instead of just a common NPC. They would put in a request ticket to be allowed to play in the game. They would be granted the AI rights to do so and they would start their life as a player. Sometimes, they would join an existing player character.

The players were allowed to give their NPCs whatever personality they chose, and the NPCs would act accordingly. Their acting would be done by the AI engine for the NPC's character. In the case of the player, they would have the freedom to create their character as they wished and allow the NPCs to pick/play them when they were activated as a NPC.

In this way, the players were able to control entirely their characters and could have some form of interaction with the NPCs. All of the company's goods would be sold to the players or NPCs or both.

This is how the game progressed. The players ventured in the game and created networks and connections. They made chaos and did mayhem. At times, they would spearhead governments and create nations and make new laws, such as 'No slavery' and 'No murder,' along with basic health care laws.

At times, they would create nations that were all about the enjoyment of leisure, such as those devoted to movies or games, while sometimes a nation would be created to excel in certain fields, such as medicine, math, engineering and science. All nations would compete to be the most powerful.

There was a time when the company took control of the game so as to create a virtual world that was more closely tied to some of the real world's countries. In this way, people from each nation could choose to live in the game, and instead of being the soldiers they had been, they would become the citizens that were also the players who they had been.
