Don't be that kind of leader or parents who will always take away that task from your child when he says "mom I can't do it", "mom I can't get to the place because I dont know the road that leads there".
Putting them into test and pushing them to do what they feel they can't do.try and put a prize or punishment behind it such they would want to try, even if they eventually couldn't, it would have stretched them. Stretching never kills.
A leader that pities her followers too much is doing them a great harm and is the 'witch' that has kept them from evolving. Don't also wallow in self pity. Give it a try.
The weakest have pushed himself to the front and have enough strength to achieve and attain greater height. you would just push. There are some of our mates back in school who we think can not protest and they are the ones that stretch us. That show us the doer in us.
Finally a success story is not a story of successes, no, it's often a story of a single success with many failures in between but the failures never makes the headline unless we are unwilling to jump again.
Life is full of ups and down and various challenges but we must keep moving so as to achieve and become somebody in life.
