I am also a self published author, I wrote two novels. It's difficult as hell to promote :/ I organize signing sessions in libraries and shops, but since I'm not well-known, people don't really stop by to even just chat.
My first novel was edited, so I know how it works when you are promoted by an editor, and it's not easy. You get paid like shit and they make profit on you. I quit them and now am self published.
Patience is the key !

I think that's my biggest problem; having patience! It's a good job I have other things to keep me occupied and I'm not soley relying on my writing, otherwise it'll be very demoralizing.
