Chapter 8. In the cafe

The interior of the cafe "Romantic rendezvous" and the semi-darkness in the room, together with the soft-sounding music, evoked a lyrical mood and fully corresponded to the name.

The walls were decorated with pink and purple hearts edged with gold. Small bunches of flowers were arranged in delicate vases on the tables, and napkins were arranged in the shape of white swans and pink-and-yellow roses.

Maxim, looking around the cafe hall, turned indignantly to Slavka:

– What do you think we'll look like here?" A sweet couple with a bluish coloring?

Slava, turning away, gave a stifled chuckle, trying not to laugh out loud, but when he received a poke in the side, he assumed an important look and said:

– What are you so excited about? If you have any questions, we can honestly say that we are choosing a suitable cafe for a romantic date, and at the same time decided to have a snack and evaluate the cuisine of this institution. You always make a problem out of everything, – he snorted.

Then he walked resolutely to an empty table at the back of the room, next to a spreading palm tree growing in a tub, sat down on a chair, and made an inviting gesture to Maxim. Tom had no choice but to follow his friend's example.

A moment later, a pretty young waitress appeared at the table and, with a sly smile at her friends, handed them the menu and waited for their order.

Opening the menu, Maxim quickly ran through it with his eyes, noticing the far from cheap prices, made a fairly modest order-a chop with mashed potatoes, a vegetable salad and a glass of juice. Slavka, taking advantage of his position, carefully studied the list of dishes offered and ordered some exotic dish with an unpronounceable name, and coffee with Eclair. When the waitress left, Maxim said with displeasure:

– Are we here to eat, or are we here to do something?

– One thing doesn't interfere with the other, – Slavka remarked philosophically.

Maxim shook his head disapprovingly:

– You'll get fatter this way, and no girl will come near you.

– Come on, you just don't like that you have to fork out, - Slava chuckled, and then said quietly:

– We have to pay attention. See that girl peeking out of the back room and looking right at us? What do you think that means?

Maxim cautiously squinted in the direction of the back room and recognized the girl who was looking at them as the same stranger he had seen recently in the subway car. He started, flushed slightly, and turned away in the opposite direction. Slavka, noticing his friend's embarrassment, did not fail to tease him:

– Did you really like it? What about Pelagia?

– No, it's not what you think. I met this girl on the subway the other day. Something tells me she's here for a reason. Oh, for a reason...

– Come on, don't screw yourself up. How many coincidences are there in our lives?

– No, I'm almost calm, – discontentedly grumbled Maxim, – I just don't like that kind of coincidence, Oh how like!

When the waitress brought the children order Maxim again carefully looked toward the back room, but no one was there.
