Chris climbed the hill and stopped for repose. Early in the morning, the view from the outskirts of the town was amazing. Straight as an arrow, the highway crossed the meadows engulfed in low, curling mist and stretched off into the distance. You could freely look at the sun barely risen above the horizon. The morning air was fresh and chilly. Suddenly, something happened: Chris couldn’t see the endless meadows or the morning sun anymore – just an impenetrable high wall of pure white. It wasn’t the mist, it was definitely a light, so intense that it was impossible to see anything around. A few seconds later that seemed like an eternity to Christopher, the light finally began to fade away and suddenly shifted to twilight. Chris looked ahead and froze. In the fields, just a few kilometers away from him, slowly and in absolute silence, a huge mushroom cloud was rising.
“I cannot believe this really happened!” he refused to believe his eyes. Another second later, a shock wave swept through the hills with a wild rumble and leveled the town to the ground.
Chris remained standing there. The hard radiation that preceded the wave stripped him of his physical body without him even noticing. He still had a body, though, somewhat airy and translucent but of its usual shape. And it trembled like soft cloth in the wind and rushed away, making way for the next form. Inborn and acquired in the years layers of Ego now came and went at great speed.
Among completely mystical creatures that reminded of Indian gods, familiar images could be seen. Here was Chris, the busy office worker in an expensive suit, with a briefcase in his hand and a watch dangling on his wrist; here was another of his characters: a sweet and vulnerable girl, who now became another personality – a sulky man in a body warmer with the usual signs of a hangover all over his face.
A few of his childhood and adolescence memories flashed past, symbolizing the stages of his character molding. Finally, the flow of entities shaping Chris’s mortal life faded out. He was alone now, just a ball of golden energy. At first, it held the shape of a human body. But now the bundle of energy transformed, becoming smaller and smaller as if it wanted to shrink to the size of a grain of sand. Chris didn’t feel anymore as if he had just witnessed a terrible and irreparable disaster. A deep calm took hold of him. The world around seemed to have changed too.
What used to be an evil mushroom cloud now resembled a flower on a thin stem that had yet to blossom. Moments later, Chris saw how the bud slowly came into a fire flower. The bright red petals of plasma swayed softly, freeing themselves of the bud. This sight beyond the world of living fascinated Chris. Now that all needless things abandoned him, he could see clearly that nothing bad had ever happened or would happen to him. No titanic forces of the universe could harm him, he was home everywhere he went. Forever.
