RE: FREE SPEECH. A SHORT HISTORY AND WHAT IT MEANS TO ME AND YOU.

in #writing8 years ago

Very nice history lesson with regard to freedom of speech. I used to find myself wanting to lay into people who use hate speech and such on here but, like you, I refrain from it. I don't support what they are saying but I do support their right to make fools out of themselves through the use of their own words.
One thing I might mention with regard to the US and the bill of rights addition in 1791. It specifically states "Congress shall make no law..." , the Facebooks, Twitter and other social media sights that are censoring and such are not government sites, they reserve the right to run their business as they see fit. If they determine that something a user posts doesn't fit for their "business model" or "may be offensive" they also have the right to remove the item and curtail access to the person who posted. The right to free speech isn't taken away in that scenario, the convenience of a place to say it has been taken away, and that is a big difference. I discarded using those platforms because I don't "agree " with how they do things , but I do support their right to run their business as they see fit.
Just my thoughts on the subject,

Very Valid point @sultnpapper, the only thing that is the problem with FB and their ilk is that they have the power now to either buy out the competitors or shut them down by sheer force. 2 billion+ users WW on Facebook, I don't know. It kind of reminds me over the monopoly issue with microsoft back some time over the browsers. At what point does business as usual cross into the public realm? I guess is my question. I loved what you said here, if I may quote:

I used to find myself wanting to lay into people who use hate speech and such on here but, like you, I refrain from it. I don't support what they are saying but I do support their right to make fools out of themselves through the use of their own words.

Legend!

Cheers and thank you for the comment my friend!!

Their claim is 2 billion users, I don't know how many they have, but I suspect a lot of those accounts are people like me who never closed up the account but never use it. I keep mine and post 1 post a year, on 9/11 . It is very simple post "Wake up sheeple" .
So I guess I am in their number, but not much more than that.
Keep up the great work, I truly enjoy reading you posts.

Thank you very much for you kind words. You made my day!
Cheers my friend.
