Horrible to think how people can be sometimes; sorry you had to go through that. Often policemen in the US will take peoples things and never give them back; even if the person is innocent. The law protects them, they can do what they want. At least we are moderately safe here in some areas. There is really no such thing as "safe" though; unless you have money.
