lobotomies wow!

Can you believe that lobotomies were once a big trend? People actually thought they were the answer to everything and willingly signed up for them. But let's be real, confirming this whole story without diving into the original sources is a bit tough. Here's a version that makes sense based on what people have said:

Back in the 1930s, lobotomies showed up as a way to deal with seriously tough mental issues. Then in the 1940s, this guy Walter Freeman in the U.S. started talking about them like they were magic solutions for all kinds of stuff. He did a ton of these things using an icepick, if you can believe it!

Those stories of amazing turnarounds got a bunch of families and folks thinking lobotomies were the answer to things like feeling down, being anxious, or acting out. The 1940s and 1950s saw a whole bunch of lobotomies, and not all of them were done on people who were really sick.

Media and famous people talking about lobotomies really amped up the whole "lobotomy craze." Doctors like Freeman were really sure of themselves and that made it even more popular.

But as the 1950s rolled in, people started realizing that lobotomies came with some pretty awful side effects. Turns out, they were a pretty rough way to control someone's mind.

We've got stories from actual people who had lobotomies, and it's a mixed bag. Sallie Ellen Ionesco, for instance, got some benefits from her willing lobotomy at 29, but her memory took a hit. Ann Kaufman got relief from her blues after going through with a lobotomy at 33, but she became way too passive. Alice Hammatt's 45-year-old lobotomy helped her chill out, but it totally changed who she was. And then there's poor Howard Dully, who got a lobotomy when he was just 12 and it messed him up pretty badly.

So, here's the deal: lobotomies were totally in vogue before people realized how bad they could be.
