The Shape of Water and Writing

in #writting6 years ago

You know what I absolutely hate but love at the exact same times, splitting my psyche in half pieces with each other like if you were about to rip open a banana for lunch?. Disney movies, I hate them so much, they are the cheesiest, cheapest, and probably worst comic attempt to make a "dramatic movie", it is the exact same time and time again in an attempt to wake some kind of empathy for the main characters hoping that the audience will like it.

And you know what?, they do, well, yes, they tore away the parts that seemed even if a little bit mature, and made it so that it was impossible for the story to continue without singing a song every five seconds which i must say, exasperate me... Or is it?, you'll see, some time ago I revisited Pinocchio, just because i could, and noticed... That that movie is broken, it is absolutely horrible, it has drug addiction, alcoholism, human trafficking and certain tints of pedophilia.

Still, i didn't notice those things when i was a kid, they are deep underneath the surface of the plot, and the same things happen with almost if not absolutely every single movie within Walt Disney's Filmography, hell the sleeping beauty isn't about the princess and the prince, it is more about the princess and the relationship with her fairy godmothers and lost parents, king and queen of the kingdom, and here is where "The Shape of Water" comes in.

So, a poor girl with not the best social status, finds a beast, and within him finds the love of his life.... Does it sound familiar?, yes, i know, this time it is a fish and not a fluffy giant bear, but in concept it is the same, they have the protagonist, the beauty, the beast, being the fish, Gaston as Fleming, Zelda Fuller as Mrs. Potts, and the list could go on, and on.

Being sincere, at first, I did not completely got to like this movie, i thought it was pretencious, filled with lots of clichés and stuff just to make you connect with the characters on screen, and it just felt kind of on the face, from my point of view at least, but then i revised it, and compared it to that of Walt Disney's, and thinking about it, kind of makes the movie better, because thinking about it, this is one of those cases where the work in and off itself, is more than the sum of its parts.

It's not just about being cheap with the overused story of the impossible love, it’s the presentation, the whole atmosphere is great, the dialogues feel beautifully written, the execution that Guillermo Del Toro had in the film makes it worthy of its prices, but however, is it worthy of the praise?.

It is known that the plot of the movie was kind of plagiarized a story called "Let me Hear you Whisper” and I won’t get into details because i think it is a little coincidence, but here is my point, the whole plot is so basic in the grand scheme of things that it can be easily mistaken, the characters are good but not the best of the best, and yes the atmosphere and scenery are also good but they are better in numerous movies, like, for example.

This is not a perfect masterpiece, and you know it because of how predictable the ending was, because of how the character develop just the way you thought they will, because of how basic the plot is, because pretty much everything that this movie does right, but still not "perfectly", the point being, I don't understand the fuss around it, but maybe I'm being a bit cynical here on my keyboard... Just maybe...

I know I'm late to the party, but i just joined steemit and had this down the ally from a long time ago so... That's it

Anyways, just a "because" to the "Why" of a random critic, thanks for reading.
