How are we going to sell things in our Steemshop?

A small update about how we are going to sell things in our Steemshop

First: thank you for all the comment on our first post. We didn't have mana to answer them all, but had to do it from our other profiles :(

We already have the first products we want to sell, a series of collectible figurines based on @katharsisdrill's comic, Phill from GCHQ, made by @evilhippie.

Gwendolyn's Celtic Cult

But first we have had to discuss how to actually go about this. We will write a post tomorrow where the way we handle things will be explained in a clear way so we can link to it on the following posts. But here is a quick overview and some explanations of the term we have agreed on. Comment are of course appreciated.

Only Steem is accepted in the Steemshop

We will only recieve Steem in the Steemshop. As the market right now demonstrates the Steemdollar (SBD) is also prone to fluctuations and as we mainly are interested in investing in the Steem currency and Steemit platform we have chosen to just trade in Steem. This has certain advantages for us:

  1. It will be easier for us to make the accounting that will be needed. 1 Steem is after all always 1 Steem.
  2. As we plan to power up everything we earn, we will not have any losses or gains when we trade between Steem and SBD.
  3. The price will be clear and easy to understand.
  4. No need to calculate multible prices that might deviate from each other in the course of the offer.
  5. It will strengten Steem both as a brand and if people have to buy steem, also the steem prize.

We have planned to power up all our earnings to support the Steemit platform. This only goes for the things we (@katharsisdrill & @evilhippie) will sell in the Steemshop, and not if we have guest vendors. What they do with their earning is of course up to them.

If you do not have any Steem they can be bought for other crypto-currencies on Blocktrades or other exchanges, and it is of course also possible to ask if a certain object can be reserved for later purchase.

Seven day offers

The selling will be organised in offers that last as long as the post. One week. For that week the Steem prize we have set for the product is going to stand no matter what happens to the prize of Steem. It will of course be possible to buy later if the product is not sold or is a edition or series. But a new prize will then have to be agreed on mainly based on the original prize in fiat.

E-mail korrespondance

Underneath each offer there will be an e-mail where people can order. Comment are more than welcome and highly appreciated, but for the actual ordering a private connection is needed - we will have to receive addresses and other private information anyways.

Offers from other Steemit artists

When we have tried out this model for a while we will be delighted to have other Steemit artists making such one week offers here on Ye Olde Steemshop. The principles we have discussed are these:

  1. We ask people if they like to sell in the Steemshop, not the other way around. We are not interested in being a platform like Etsy, but mainly a little shop selling things we like. Don't worry, we are not going to be nose in the sky art curators, but the decision who sells things at our store is ours.
  2. We will not ask for any share of the profit! All the Steem will go to the artist. Our share will only be the upvotes on the post itself. The actual trade will then also be a matter between the seller and the buyer with us just setting up the initial terms and the marketing. The reason for this is simply that we mainly do this for fun, and will benefit from the activity on the Steemshop blog. It will also be a nice way to support the people whose art and craft we like.

There is still things we will have to figure out - but for now these are our intentions.

A post with these terms will be made one of the next days, so we can link to it.

Thank you for the interest in this experiment, we are looking forward to getting started. The first offers are already in the pipeline, but we needed to get formalia fixed first.

                                                                                      Yours sincerely

                                                                             @evilhippie & @katharsisdrill

Sort:

The Phill figurines look like they were made out of chocolate, yummy ;-)

olde-steemshop is good, but I would have suggested:
The Dynamic Danish Brothers ;-)

For many years, @evilhippie's alter ego was Fat Freddy actually!

I think you mean prices rather than prizes. I'll have to make sure I have some Steem available to use. If stuff is only available for a week I may not have time to power down to get some.

Yes of course prices. I will answer from my own account since mana is still an issue. We do not plan to make stuff available for only one week, but the prices will only be valid for one week. we have talked about how to handle the expenses of making the thing compared to the sometimes volatile nature of steem price, and decided that we could not guarantee a given price for more than the duration of a post. we have no intentions of changing prices significantly unless the steem price changes, but just to make sure we are not caught having to sell at a price where we lose a lot of money, to live up to a price.
If the offer runs out and the item(or items) is/are not sold out, it will be possible to still buy them but the price will have to be renegotiated.

I fixed the typo, Thanks :)

A lot of Steem seems to be bound in Steem-power and people has to power down or buy Steem with other crypto currencies. This is a test and we will of course make it possible for everyone to buy.

I had this cash flow problem in the late summer where I needed to pay for the auto-voting service, but didn't have any SBD ready. After that I have made sure to have some cash at all times :)

I may just take 50/50 rewards to build up some Steem. I've been powering everything up, but I'm open to buying things for Steem.

I hope to see the Steem price improve so we have more buying power. Next year will be interesting.

I just wrote the manifesto and in reality the agreement between the seller and the buyer is made in private e-mail correspondences where any old agreement can be reached. That includes: buying on credit, paying in other currencies - fiat or crypto, barter trade and much more. We just provide the framework, and we are just interested in making things work.

None the less it is still our idea that we will sell our own things in Steem. The things we sell ourselves will be powered up and our votes on the profile will go to quality content that we like across the platform. But for customers we trust payment might for example come in rates when available. Just like in old fashioned stores - so no worry :)

This post contained some typos in its mentions that have been corrected in less than a day. Thank you for your quick edit !

A fine endeavor, I wish you all the luck. I was just recently checking out makersplace.com, where you can sell digital copies of your art, in limited number, authenticated in the ethereum blockchain. Sounds like something that could be also done in and with steem, right? I'd be interested in that for sure.

@shortcut and others have already done quite a lot of selling on this limited edition digital art thing. My own art is Creative Commons so it doesn't really fit this concept, so we try to go another way and actually sell real things. But it is an interesting model. There is a market for small editions and why not digital art? I would also like to see it done with Steem. As a internet currency the speed and the no-fee feature is a very strong selling point of Steem.

This really does seem like a fun idea, though I think you should still take a bit of the profit, I mean your labour IS worth Steem, I think anyway. An artist is certainly familiar with the 'share the profit' mindset if they've ever sold anything through a gallery or any platform, but it's your Oldee Timee Shopee not mine. :)

Good luck and what other cool things are you gonna sell?!

We did consider to take a bit of profit. But with the artist doing almost all the work and doing all the communication, we thought that it would be OK to let them have it all. Limiting the work you have to do is also important!

We have planned to sell prints, maybe some unika pieces like drawings or little sculptures, boxes... you name it. Any kind of art objects that is worth more than the postage.

If you send an email to this address we could contact when we have a little more experience.

I would love a nice place to sell my wood burning pieces. Hope the store is a success. I shall follow and keep updated with the project.

Noted (about the wood burning pieces :)

It is still an experiment, but maybe it can help starting some more trade in Steem. It would be a good thing for us all.
