The forest fire aftermath in Treuenbrietzen, Brandenburg

The fire destroyed more than 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of woodland outside the nearby city of Potsdam and periodically set off munitions left behind during World War II. Brandenburg has endured a particularly hot summer this year, and rainfall has been scarce for several months. Vast areas have dried up as a result, increasing the risk of fires.
